For the millions who log in every day, Warcross isn’t just a game—it’s a way of life. The obsession started ten years ago and its fan base now spans the globe, some eager to escape from reality and others hoping to make a profit. Struggling to make ends meet, teenage hacker Emika Chen works as a bounty hunter, tracking down players who bet on the game illegally. But the bounty hunting world is a competitive one, and survival has not been easy. Needing to make some quick cash, Emika takes a risk and hacks into the opening game of the international Warcross Championships—only to accidentally glitch herself into the action and become an overnight sensation. Convinced she’s going to be arrested, Emika is shocked when instead she gets a call from the game’s creator, the elusive young billionaire Hideo Tanaka, with an irresistible offer. He needs a spy on the inside of this year’s tournament in order to uncover a security problem . . . and he wants Emika for the job. With no time to lose, Emika’s whisked off to Tokyo and thrust into a world of fame and fortune that she’s only dreamed of. But soon her investigation uncovers a sinister plot, with major consequences for the entire Warcross empire.

Warcross: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

Wildcard: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I cannot put into words how much I loved this duology. I get a little nervous when I see that there are only two books in a series because I find that it can be hard to tell a whole story in just two books. Normally a stand-alone or trilogy is where I like to go. But, of course, Marie Lu is changing my whole mindset on that.

Warcross was an excellent futuristic book. I loved how it was modern enough that I could connect the dots to what I know about society now, but also advanced enough for me to see that the future is going to be a lot different than what I think. The book takes place in New York, New York at the beginning, but most of the story is in Tokyo. I really liked that the story wasn't entirely based on the United States, like most dystopian novels are. It was refreshing to see that the U.S. isn't the only country that still exists 😂.

Emika was a super interesting character to read about. I loved her determination and her humanity. She is highly intelligent and is a gamer! I can't think of many books that feature female gamers and the main character. I also really enjoyed that she didn't leave her mission because of Hideo. She was incredibly strong in her beliefs and had a group of friends that helped her to achieve what she wanted to happen. Plus, her hair was spot on. I almost want to have rainbow hair now.

This was an amazing story that was unlike anything I've read before. I highly recommend this duology, especially if you are a girl who loves video games! Warcross has an amazing world-building that is easy to follow along with, plus has some amazing characters (and plot twists)!
