Seventeen-year-old Audrey Rose Wadsworth was born a lord’s daughter, with a life of wealth and privilege stretched out before her. But between the social teas and silk dress fittings, she leads a forbidden secret life. Against her stern father’s wishes and society’s expectations, Audrey often slips away to her uncle’s laboratory to study the gruesome practice of forensic medicine. When her work on a string of savagely killed corpses drags Audrey into the investigation of a serial murderer, her search for answers brings her close to her own sheltered world.

I've been in a reading slump for about a week (I know that's not super long but bear with me) and this book grabbed me by the ears and pulled me out of it. I was so invested in this book. I loved that Audrey Rose is a woman of color and the main character of an 1800s murder mystery. This story was intriguing and the plot twists were amazing! My entire heart belongs to Thomas Cresswell now. Well, next to all my other book boyfriends 😂.
I loved seeing how much of the story historically lines up with the tale of Jack the Ripper. I also really love period pieces, so this was right up my alley. Kerri Maniscalco does an amazing job describing the setting and the characters. I understood Audrey Rose really well. I especially loved seeing the day-to-day activities all the characters went through.
Now, I am no forensic scientist, so I have no idea how much of this is true, but what I saw was very interesting! Would I ever go into this line of work? Absolutely not. Was it cool seeing a woman doing a job that mostly belonged to me? YES! This brings me to Audrey Rose. I LOVED HER CHARACTER! I related to her struggles on a personal level. Trying to do something in a field dominated by men in a world dominated by men is difficult! But she didn't give up, and she gave the men a piece of her mind when it all got to be a bit much, which is incredibly like me. I cannot wait to see what she does in the rest of these novels!
