Review: Instant Karma by Marissa Meyer

Chronic overachiever Prudence Daniels is always quick to cast judgment on the lazy, rude, and irritating residents of her coastal town. She dreams of a world in which people might actually get what they deserve... Pru’s dreams of karmic justice are fulfilled after a night out with her friends when she wakes up with the sudden, wondrous ability to cast instant karma on those around her. Though it seems almost too good to be true, Pru is not one to ignore such obvious signs from the universe. She giddily starts to make use of the power, but there is one person on whom her powers consistently backfire: Quint Erickson, her slacker of a lab partner. Quint is annoyingly cute and unexpectedly noble, especially when it comes to his work at a rescue center for local sea animals. When Pru resigns herself to volunteering at the rescue center for extra credit, she begins to uncover truths about baby otters, environmental upheaval, and what the universe might really be trying to tell her about Quint—not necessarily in that order. Her newfound karmic insights reveal how thin the line is between virtue and vanity, generosity and greed... love and hate.

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

I don't believe that I have ever read a contemporary novel that has enemies-to-lovers in it but granted, I don't read that much contemporary. (Put some recs in the comments!) The gif "they had us in the first half, not gonna lie" is a perfect way to summarize my thoughts while reading. Prudence really got on my nerves at the beginning, and Quint did too, for that matter. I loved how their character development grew throughout the book. And the setting? Fantastic. I never really wanted to live in a seaside town more than I do now. The small town beach vibes were immaculate. Now, I know that the point of the novel was the instant karma addition, but I wish that it had been left out. I understand that a lot of it was for Prudence's character development, but the story was sweet without all of that. It gave me Dolphin Tale vibes without the instant karma factor, which I loved. I really would love to volunteer at an animal rescue center since reading this book 😂. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves contemporary romance, but I wouldn't tell everyone to pick up this book right now.
