Cinderella has been dead for over 200 years. Everyone is taught her story. Well, the palace issued version, that is. Every year, girls who are of age go to the annual ball with the hopes of finding a suitor, just like Cinderella. If every girl bases their entire lives around this ball, then why does it feel so wrong to Sophia? Maybe it's because she decided long ago that she would rather have a princess than a prince. At the ball, Sophia makes the decision to run away, something few people have ever even dared to dream about. On her way, she meets a strange girl traveling alone. Together, they decide that just running away isn't enough. In order to truly be free, the need to uncover the true story of Cinderella in order to overthrow the patriarchal government. Maybe Cinderella's story isn't such a fairy tale after all.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
I've heard many mixed reviews about this book, but personally, I loved it! This was such a unique take on a classic story that (almost) every person knows and loves. It is a glorious retelling and made me question all the fairy tales I know. The plot was well thought out and well executed. I loved the world building, though it did make me mad at some points, but it is designed that way. The ending was a little weird. A few of the choices made by the characters seemed really bizarre and, well, out-of-character, which is why I took off half of a star. Overall, I think this was a wonderful story about two girls who dare to dream of a better society and who make it happen, despite the odds that are stacked against them.
